A Week on the Norwegian Getaway

December 28, 2018

Adam and I took our first trip together over Thanksgiving. Since I had been on a couple of cruises out of Galveston before, we wanted to try a new port and cruise line. We found the Norwegian Getaway out of Miami for a great price and booked it.

Of the three cruises I have been on, Norwegian has got the embarkation down. There are no lines to wait in, and everything is organized so well. During online check-in, we chose the time we wanted to arrive at the pier. Then, on sailing day, we went through the security line, got our keycards, and waited for about 30 minutes in a large, airport-style waiting room before they called out group numbers to board.  Everything went quickly and there was no lines to wait in.

The ship

The Norwegian Getaway was built in 2014, so it was the newest ship I have sailed on. It holds just under 4,000 guests and is just over 1,000 feet long. There’s an aqua park, casino, spa and salon, sports complex, fitness center, and much more. As a first time cruise, Adam said he often forgot he was on a ship because it was so big. There’s always something to do, and the entertainment staff has a variety of activities planned for all types of interests.

There is even a Waterfront with restaurants and bars for you to enjoy one-of- a- kind views of the ocean

The room

Norwegian offers a program where you can place a bid on a room upgrade. I found out just a few days before sailing my bid was accepted and we were upgraded to an oceanview balcony. Honestly, this spoiled me. I will never cruise in an interior room again. It was so nice to watch the sun set and relax on the balcony. Plus, the room is larger, so you have space to store your luggage.

The food

The Getaway has 6 complimentary restaurants, plus an extra restaurant for Haven guests. There are also 12 speciality dining options and restaurants on board. Adam and I stuck with the included food, with the exception of one night. Recommendations: make reservations early. They fill up fast, and its nice to have a guaranteed spot. The buffet hosts theme dinners each night of the cruise. Whatever you like to eat, they will have a some point.

The entertainment

Aside from the incredible dancing with “Burn the Floor” and the Broadway Show “Million Dollar Quartet,” the entertainment crew works tirelessly to create fun atmosphere in all areas of the ship. At any given time there are a variety of activities and games you can participate in and watch. Whether you watch the newlywed show or participate in the dancing competition in the Atrium or enter the Mr. Sexy Legs competition at the pool, there are plenty of things to keep you smiling throughout your cruise. Oh, and I may or may not have won the dance competition and spent the rest of the cruise being pointed at and asked over and over if I was “the girl on TV.” Yes, they film and show these shows in your room in case you miss them.
