Happy Wednesday!  One more day to fall, my absolute favorite season of all.  I am ready for the pumpkin spice everything.  Since school has started back up, and my schedule is somewhat regular again, I thought I would share a day in the life post.  It is difficult working full time while keeping up a blog and social media presence, but it can be done with excellent time management skills. Here are some tips for how to blog and work full time.

Tips for how to blog and work full time

It can be hard balancing a full time work schedule and finding time to blog. Here are some of the things I have found helpful along the way.

You should plan ahead and write when you have time. I am always jotting notes in my phone as blog ideas come to me. During the week, I give myself at least an hour a night to write. However, on the weekends I get the bulk of the writing and planning complete.

Learn when to say no

It is important to prioritize tasks and learn to say no to protect what’s important. Sometimes that may mean saying no to going out with friends and stay home and write. Other times, you may have to skip a post and spend time with family. It’s all about balance.

Make time

There should be quiet time set aside every day for yourself. You can use that time to take a bubble bath, do yoga, meditate or spend time with God. Whatever you choose, make it something that makes you feel good and refreshed.

My “typical” daily schedule

5:30-5:45: Wake up, social media check-ins

5:50-6:20: Morning booty call: AM run or TIU strength move of the day

6:20-6:25: Drink at least 16 oz of water (did you know you are supposed to drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water?  Read this for tips on staying hydrated) and quick rinse off, freshen up in the shower after morning run.

6:25-6:55: Get ready for work (yes, I can get dressed and do my hair and makeup in 30 minutes)

6:55-7:10: Make and eat breakfast (or take protein shake on the go)

7:10-7:35: Commute to work

7:35-3:45: Work. Work. Work. Work. Work.

  • Around 10:00 am I have my first snack of the day:  usually some fruit (a peach and almonds are my go-to)
  • Around 12:00-12:30ish I have lunch.  I don’t have a “lunch time” and eat on the go.  Typically my lunches are leftovers from the night before, a salad, or lettuce wrap.
  • Around 2:00-2:30 I have my second snack of the day: usually carrots and hummus, snack bar or a healthy snack mix

3:45-4:05: Commute home

4:05-4:45: Social Media check-ins, blog comment replys

5:00-5:50: Barre Code class at the Barre Code Plano

6:10-6:40: Make dinner- I meal prep on Sundays to make this a quicker process.

6:40-7:00: Dinner with Colton

7:00-7:10: Shower & PJs

7:10-8:30: Netflix and blogging (writing, scheduling, planning, taking photos, etc.).

8:30-9:30: Netflix and quality time with Colton (I try to put my computer away for the last hour so we can hang out)

9:30-10:00: Plan/prepare for tomorrow (read this post to know how I plan for the next day)

10:00-10:30: Quiet time/reflection on the day before bed

Whew, you are busy! But great ideas on when to blog though.

    That smoothie bowl looks amazing.

    • Jessica September 21, 2016 at 9:08 am

Thanks, Amber. Smoothie bowls are my favorite.

  • Rebecca Hicks September 21, 2016 at 6:42 am

There’s no way I could stay up so late! My hubby and I are in bed by 9-9:30 every day. I love that you make sure to spend quality time with Colten! It is so easy to get wrapped up in life that it can to go the wayside. You’re an inspiration girl!

    • Jessica September 21, 2016 at 9:09 am

haha. I know! I used to be in bed by 9:30 every night. Now I am closer to 10:30. I feel like I am always go go go, I need TV/relaxation time before bed.

  • Brittany September 21, 2016 at 7:34 am

This was the perfect thing to see today. I am a full time grad student, an unpaid intern, work an unreliable schedule part time and am a blogger. I used to be pretty scheduled but the last couple months I have been slacking. Time to get back to it. Thanks for the post!

    • Jessica September 21, 2016 at 9:10 am

Of course! Wow! You have your hands full too. I totally remember those days. I am just lucky I don’t have children right now because with working, blogging, assisting my husband with his photography on the weekends, helping out at the barre, maintaining friendships and relationships… I don’t have time for them.

  • Julie September 21, 2016 at 7:42 am

You’ve got your life down to an awesome schedule. You make the time to exercise and plan healthy meals, which is so important. I am so jealous that you are in pajamas by 7pm with Netflix time with your hubby to follow. Once again, you are an inspiration!

    • Jessica September 21, 2016 at 9:34 am

Julie, you are so sweet! Pajamas help me relax and, although I spend too much time watching TV, it does too. haha

  • Shannon September 21, 2016 at 7:46 am

Blogging + working + kids can be so hard! It’s all about balance and it seems like you have a great schedule. I admire you for getting up early and putting important things first! I have young kids and it’s hard to balance their schedules with sports and school events plus my work events. I go to bed exhausted!!

    • Jessica September 21, 2016 at 9:35 am

Yes! I am sure. I go to bed exhausted and I don’t have kids. (Other than the 350 at school I see every day, but that’s not the same, haha).

  • Logan September 21, 2016 at 8:54 am

I love reading other people’s schedules and how they organize their day! Side note: I got really dehydrated a couple of weeks ago and my doctor had me drink 100 oz in a day. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Seriously. haha I would much rather drink half my body weight than ever do that again.

    • Jessica September 21, 2016 at 9:36 am

Haha. I can’t even imagine! That sounds terrible!

  • Amelia September 21, 2016 at 9:56 am

I have to admit, I’m not an early riser, but I do admire you for it. 🙂 I think having a schedule is really the only way to get everything done and achieve balance. Without a schedule, it’s just chaos.

  • Morgan September 21, 2016 at 10:57 am

Great tips! Netflix and blogging is the new Netflix and chill 🙂

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:10 am

Haha. Now if we could just get that on a tanktop. 🙂

  • Charlotte September 21, 2016 at 11:47 am

I love these day in the life posts–and you are very productive with your time! Thanks for sharing–I would like to carve out more time on weekends for blog post writing, at least so I’m not scrambling mid-week to come up with topics!

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:11 am

Yes! The weekends are the best time for me to get stuff done.

  • Liz September 21, 2016 at 12:27 pm

Great post! I like how you’ve detailed your day for inspiration. 🙂

For me, I try to make the most out of my commute. I take the train into work and I write/jot ideas for potential posts in Google Docs. Most of my posts get written in Docs and then cleaned up in WordPress.

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:12 am

Google docs is my best friend for that reason (and countless others). 🙂

  • Willow September 21, 2016 at 1:15 pm

I have always wondered how bloggers work full time and blog. I am fortunate in that I left a career several years ago that was no longer serving me, and in that time I started a blog. I put so much time into it that I can’t imagine myself working a full time job too. I do have to say though, that it has gotten easier and I am managing my time better. In the beginning it was all about learning everything.

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:12 am

Yes! It is getting much easier. So glad you were able to leave your career. 🙂

  • Sarah Prince September 21, 2016 at 2:26 pm

So you don’t have kids? All that time after work in the late afternoon will be shot if you have a family.

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:14 am

Which is why I don’t have one. haha. I spend all day with children, so I get all of my nurturing and loving on babies during that time. 😉

  • Renee groskreutz September 21, 2016 at 3:46 pm

Wow that is a structured day for sure. My day is mostly me trying to make sure that I get my blogging done and a shower.

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:15 am

I understand. Not every day is this structured. I didn’t include any dinners out, friend time, event, PTA, etc. that I am attending during the week.

  • candy September 21, 2016 at 3:55 pm

Tracking your day hour by hour really helps a person see how their day goes. Mornings are my best time to blog and afternoons are the best time to write up new blog posts.

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:18 am

Yes! Its amazing how much time it saves knowing where it goes.

  • September 21, 2016 at 4:04 pm

Yay – another early bird! 🙂 I have to get up super early, too, to fit in my workouts. And I totally agree with your tip about “Just saying No” … but you’re right – you have to say no to blogging/website/social media sometimes, too. I have a habit of thinking that I can’t say no to that when I really neeeeed to. Thanks for sharing!

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:19 am

Saying no to blog related things was harder than life things until I readjusted my priorities. 🙂

  • Neely (@Neelykins) September 21, 2016 at 4:23 pm

When I worked full time out of my blog planning was key! Me time was also rare 🙁

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:19 am

Hopefully you get as much me time in as you can before the baby comes

  • Kaley September 21, 2016 at 5:11 pm

Sounds exhausting! I’m currently looking for work so my blog is a project to keep myself busy, happy, and sane during that process, but I do plan on keeping it going once I find full-time work. Currently my schedule is
    2-4PM: Social media scheduling/sharing
    7:30-8:30PM: Work out
    11PM-12:30AM: Write or edit
    2AM-2PM: Sleep

    I know, I have a crazy weird sleeping schedule…

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:20 am

Haha. You do, but if it works for you, then awesome! 🙂

  • Rachel September 21, 2016 at 8:06 pm

I love hearing how other people spend their time! Learning when to say no is something I’ve been trying to work on. I also wish more time was for fun and less for work 🙂

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:21 am

Yes! However, I make fun time when I choose to say no to my blog. It’s all about balance.

  • dixya @food, pleasure, and health September 21, 2016 at 9:01 pm

this is a constant battle for me…

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:21 am

      I feel ya, girl!

  • Jenny September 21, 2016 at 10:14 pm

I totally need to start working out in the mornings. I need someone to kick my booty into gear. Loved getting a look into your day.
    xoxo, Jenny

    • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:22 am

It really does help me feel better throughout the day!

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More September 22, 2016 at 9:36 am

There’s definitely a balance between full-time work and blogging!

  • Jessica September 22, 2016 at 11:22 am

  • Anushka Wickramaratne September 22, 2016 at 4:17 pm

Ooh, I loveee catching a glimpse into the life of others. Yours certainly did not disappoint. (:

I definitely agree about being able to do everything .. but not all at once. There’s definitely importance in balance and prioritizing.

    • Jessica September 25, 2016 at 10:11 pm

      Thanks so much, girl!

  • Rachel Lynn September 22, 2016 at 11:33 pm

I love how you literally have every minute planned out. That’s such a good way to stay productive and on top of things! I’ve been nervous about blogging & having a full time job, but planning out every day sounds like something I should definitely start doing!

    • Jessica September 25, 2016 at 10:11 pm

Thanks for stopping by! Of course, things happen and it doesn’t always goes as planned, but when it does, I feel so productive.

  • Courtney September 23, 2016 at 2:31 pm

It’s always so helpful to get a peek into other people’s schedules. I have been so insanely busy lately after picking up a few extra jobs and I need to find a balance ASAP.

    • Jessica September 25, 2016 at 10:12 pm

      Balance is always good!

  • Angie September 26, 2016 at 11:44 am

It’s rough for sure! Some days I do great, and some days I barely get by. But I’m blogging, working full time, and working a second part time job. It’s like having three jobs. lol

    • Jessica September 26, 2016 at 5:31 pm

lol. Girl, I feel ya! My husband is a wedding photographer, and I assist him on the weekends. Three full time jobs are no joke!

  • Christian Plush Simone September 28, 2016 at 3:58 pm

This flow is the dream. I wish I could do those things but traveling and working makes it hard. But I love the elements of batch processing in order to get all those things done.
