Date Night: Pizza Contest and Netflix

Once a month, Colton and I have a MYO (Make Your Own) pizza night. It is one of our favorite things to do together.  We turn our pizza making skills into a contest.  The criteria: the most delicious and/or the prettiest pizza (we usually pick our own, so it isn’t really a fair contest…just super fun).  This also is a really fun family night activity.  Colton and I tried it with my cousin’s daughters when they were in town for Thanksgiving.  Next time you are looking for a date night/ family fun night idea, you should try this.

What you will need:

  • Pizza dough (we get two because we each make a big pizza and save the leftover for lunches the next couple of days)
  • Pizza sauce
  • Mozzerella cheese
  • Pepperoni (Or any other toppings you fancy)
  • Veggies (I use whatever we have at the house-typically onions and green bell peppers)

I get all of our pizza making stuff at Trader Joes, but you can use whatever you want.  The Trader Joe’s ingredients are healthy and taste wonderful.

  • Wine! (Not necessary but makes it more fun)love you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger foodie healthy date night pizza recipe trader joes

Steps:

  1. Meet your spouse at the door with a glass of wine in your pajamas and tell them it is “Make Your Own Pizza Night” (Then, let them change while you prep the ingredients)
  2. The Trader Joes dough needs to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes, so drink some wine and relax (or you can have it ready to go by the time your spouse gets home).
  3. Preheat oven to 350°
  4. Spread out the dough.  I like my dough to be thin and crispy.  Colton likes his more of a pan crust style. Poke repeatedly with a fork.love you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger foodie healthy date night pizza recipe trader joes
  5. Continue to drink wine
  6. Optional: I like to add a honey drizzle and some crushed red pepper to my dough, so it gives it a little sweet and spicy taste.love you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger foodie healthy date night pizza recipe trader joes
  7. Add pizza sauce and spread smoothlove you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger foodie healthy date night pizza recipe trader joes
  8. Cover with cheese
  9. Top with your favorite toppings- This is the time to smack talk, compliment, or work together.  It is really up to you.love you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger foodie healthy date night pizza recipe trader joes
  10. Show off your creation and pop it in the ovenlove you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger foodie healthy date night pizza recipe trader joes
  11. Drink wine while you wait for the pizza to finish cooking
  12. Once the dough has browned, take it out and let it sit for a few minutes before cutting it.
  13. Enjoy!love you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger foodie healthy date night pizza recipe trader joes

We like to cuddle up on the couch with our pizza and watch Netflix (we are currently binge watching OITNB) or a movie.

I hope you enjoy this fun, delicious, and super easy date night.  Make it your own monthly tradition.

  • Brittany @ Everyday Thoughts March 16, 2016 at 9:45 am

I love making pizzas as a family. It’s great because my son can participate. We really like to make them on the grill! But we always seem to make it a date night when the littles go to bed and we rent a movie. A little lame but it’s a great way for us to cuddle, relax and spend time together.

    • Jessica March 16, 2016 at 5:11 pm

Not lame at all. It’s sweet. I don’t have littles, but movie nights are always a good reason for snuggle time with the hubby.

What a fun idea! We’ve done pizza and Netflix before, but never make your own! This would be perfect for my picky eater daughter as well. 🙂

Pizza is a staple in our house since I have my recipe down after years working in pizza joints. Always poke the crust!! Great tip. I think a lot of people are unaware this makes your pie 1,000 X better!

    • Jessica March 17, 2016 at 10:24 am

Lucky!! It really does. Such an important step and great!

  • Kelly March 17, 2016 at 9:51 am

We do homemade pizza every Friday night, just as my husbands family did when he was growing up. I love the addition of the crushed red pepper on the crust…we’ll have to try that on the grown ups pizza!

    • Jessica March 17, 2016 at 10:21 am

I love spicy spicy so I add to crush and top it with red pepper. Hope you enjoy!

  • Dia @ All The Things I Do March 18, 2016 at 10:15 am

This looks like an amazing date night! We were both getting over this bug going around San Antonio last Friday, so we ordered in a pizza and watched The Office on Netflix till we fell asleep lol

    • Jessica March 18, 2016 at 4:42 pm

Sounds like the perfect night (minus the stomach bug. yuck!) The bug hit Dallas a few weeks ago and it was not pretty.

  • Amber @ Amber Lately March 18, 2016 at 5:12 pm

This is a seriously adorable idea! My husband and I have two kids, two and under, so going out on dates is difficult. I love finding new and fun things we can do at home once we put the kiddos to bed. We will definitely be adding this to the home date rotation.

    • Jessica March 19, 2016 at 8:20 am

Thank you, Amber! This would be perfect for you then. 🙂

  • Reginia Cordell March 21, 2016 at 6:16 am

The honey and drizzle tips probably puts the pizza just near perfection. I’m going to try this with my next meat lovers pizza.

    • Jessica March 21, 2016 at 12:53 pm

The honey and red pepper really do add a little something to it! I hope you love it!
