I Mustache You

My Favorite Album + Travel Pairings

Nowadays, there are food pairings of all kinds happening all of the time… It’s not just limited to wine and cheese anymore. You can now attend a Whiskey and Beer pairing session in the Design District’s Meddlesome Moth, head to Luck Restaurant at Trinity Groves and have a Glazed Donut and Craft Beer pairing breakfast, or get crazy with it, head to Trader Joe’s and make up your own pairing (For the record, Cookie Butter Ice Cream pairs really well with literally any other dessert food).

So, here I am at my second “I Mustache You” blog post and there are literally TENS of things I could write about (I’m a pretty simple guy). So, since music and travel are two of my favorite things ever, I decided to combine the two and write about my favorite Album + Travel pairings.

Good music during a vacation is like good lighting in a photograph, or ice cream on a slice of apple pie (preferably Cookie Butter ice cream). It can make or break your experience. And when I say good music, I mean music in which the artist themselves wrote the melodies, lyrics, etc, and there is some emotion attached to it. Please don’t go on a trip with nothing but Rhianna, T-Swift, Drake and Maroon 5 on your playlist… I beg you. You can listen to that anytime (literally… one of those artists will always be on at least one radio station at any given point).

Ok, that’s enough ranting from me. Here is part one of my favorite Album + Travel pairings…

Album Number 1:

Jonsi – Go

If you’ve seen any of the How to Train Your Dragon movies or We Bought a Zoo, you’ve heard this guy’s music. Jonsi is the lead singer of Icelandic ethereal rock band Sigur Ros, and the album “Go” is his first solo record (born from a backlog of songs Jonsi had written, but didn’t quite mesh with Sigur Ros’ style). This album will truly highten and enhance your ability to soak in the beauty in your surroundings… Not kidding. If you’re in a really beautiful place and you’re listening to this album, have the tissues ready. This is a full bodied album, with hints of optimism and jubilant celebration, notes of whimsicality and earthiness, and an emotional and heavy-hearted finish. (see what I did there?)

Pairs well with:

A road trip through the Italian Wine Country.love you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger foodie travel Jonsi Italian wine country

Does not pair well with:

Busy cities, traffic, etc.

Album Number 2:

Jack’s Mannequin – Everything In Transit

Jacks-Mannequin-Everything-In-Transit-1024x1024

This is an album that will live in mine and Jessica’s Top 5 forever. Considering the fact that Andrew McMahonwas in the process of beating Leukemia while writing this album, it’s got some surprisingly upbeat tunes that you can listen to all day while at or near a beach. We enjoyed it thoroughly while driving up the Pacific Coast Highway with the top down. Not to mention, he sings about California or the beach in just about every single one of his songs, so it just feels right.

Pairs well with:

Does not pair well with:

Non-beachy destinations

Album Number 3:

Frightened Rabbit – Midnight Organ Fight

There’s not much to say about these guys, other than they can write a song and seem to make you feel exactly what lead singer Scott Hutchinson was feeling when he wrote it. It’s raw, catchy, emotional, beautiful, laid back, to-the-point, and it doesn’t care what you think about it… Just like the beautiful country of Ireland.

Pairs well with:

A road trip around the ole Emerald Isle (Probably Scotland too, since the band is actually Scottish)love you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger foodie travel Frightened Rabbit Ireland Road Trip album and travel pairings

Doesn’t pair well with:

A fancy schmancy vacation to the Hamptons or something…

On Part 2 of Albums + Travel pairings, I’ll talk Lord Huron, The Reign of Kindo and The New Frontiers.

I hope this post doesn’t come off too hawty or “boujy” (slang for bourgeoisie). Owning a photography business has afforded Jess and I many opportunities to travel for weddings and shoots, and helped us to understand at an early age how much better “experiences” are than “things”. So now, this is what we prefer to save our money for. Traveling!

You’re welcome!

(p.s. You know how when a band finishes a song and everyone claps, they often say “Thank You”? Well, a buddy Forrest and I have always thought that it would be awesome if, instead, when they finished a song they said “You’re Welcome”. So, since this is my “takeover” and I’m not in a band anymore, that’s how I’ll end my posts. #idowhatiwant)

I love the idea of travel pairings! Like wine pairings, but more my style!

    • Jessica March 28, 2016 at 9:33 am

Haha. Right? Although, I do like wine pairings…travel and music is much more fun!

  • Bethany March 28, 2016 at 10:54 am

Oh my goodness this man is a crack up!!! Seriously wish my guy would take over my blog, maybe I can bribe him… Hm…

Nice. I am a big music fan, and although I don’t get to travel very much, I still like how he did the pairings. I have some new music to listen to…even though I’m only traveling around my city dropping the kids off. 😉

    • Jessica March 28, 2016 at 2:01 pm

Haha. I listen to most of my music driving around the city running errands, to and from work. 🙂

  • Angela @ Setting My Intention March 28, 2016 at 10:09 pm

I’m embarrassed to say that I haven’t heard any of any of these albums – but like you stated, I’m sure I’ve heard Jonsi since my kids love How to Train Your Dragon and we’ve watched all of them. I’ll have to check them out – thanks for the suggestions!

    • Jessica March 28, 2016 at 10:35 pm

Don’t be embarrassed. Colton is a huge music buff and most people haven’t heard of most of the stuff he listens to. All of the albums listed are great (jacks mannequin has a few bad words, so not kid friendly). Enjoy! 🙂
