Five Things That Simplify My Life

Hey it’s Colton again back with another I Mustache You post. I have a confession to make… Minor inconveniences or annoyances get on my nerves more than big ones.

For instance: I had to get my car inspected this weekend. But before I could do that, I had to go get new tires. I dropped my car off and then got a phone call 20 minutes later about how they couldn’t find the “wheel lock key”. So then I had to go pick up my car, and go to the dealership to buy a wheel lock key. Got the key, got my tires, and then got an inspection… Took all day.

That didn’t annoy me HALF as much as having to dirty a bowl because the opening of the salsa jar wasn’t big enough to just dip a chip straight in. Drives me nuts!

So, here are just some things that make my life easier, simpler, or just plain better.

Trader Joe’s Garlic Chipotle Salsa

Not only is this the best salsa in existence, as far as taste goes, but (as I described above) the opening of the jar is big enough to dip ANY sized tortilla chip straight in. Now, I know what you’re thinking; “That’s not sanitary”.

First of all, this is MY salsa, and I do what I want. Second, this is MY salsa, and I don’t intend on sharing with anyone. Third, the jar has a big enough opening for me to load up each chip with as much salsa as I want, and I don’t even have to double dip (in case I do, on the off-chance, share with someone). Lastly, I don’t have to dirty a dish now, so technically I’m saving the environment which makes me a good person.

Bottle Opener Key

What the heck is up with all these hipster beer companies not putting a twist off cap on their bottles? I will admit that I do feel like .02% cooler opening a bottle with a bottle opener, but that’s beside the point. Needing to hunt down a tool to open a delicious alcoholic beverage is an inconvenience.

I grabbed this house key/bottle opener at Home Depot a couple months ago. Now I get to feel .02% cooler without having to hunt down a bottle opener or use my wedding ring (not gonna lie though… I feel about 100% cooler when I open a beer with my ring).

Basics Wallet

I’ve been trying to simplify my wallet game for a long time, and it’s finally happened. Here’s the thing… If I have room for something, I’m going to put something there. I am my dad’s son, in that regard, because we’re both hoarders (sorry Dad, but it’s true). As a small business owner with a bad back, being a wallet hoarder means I keep every receipt, and my back pays for it after sitting on a big bulky wallet all day.

With the Basics Wallet, I’ve only got room for the necessities: 4 credit cards, my drivers license, my insurance card, and some cash (I could actually fit a lot more if I wanted to). The rest of what I carried now lives in my glove compartment, and now I can carry my wallet in my front pocket!

The coolest part is that, with this wallet, you pull the tab in the back and all of your cards pop up for easy access. This is my new favorite thing.  You can grab one from The Wallet Shoppe here.

Ikea Pant Hangers

So, as someone who likes a lot of bands, goes to a lot of shows, and also likes posters, I am constantly getting new posters for my office or around the house. So, rather than hang a ton of frames that I would have to swap out as often as my poster ADHD kicks in, I decided to just use Ikea pant hangers. They cost $1.99 each, and it takes about 30 seconds to swap out a poster. Plus, it looks pretty cool.

Spotify Radar Release

On that note, the other thing that is hard for me to keep up with in the music world is every time a band I like puts out a new album. From time to time I’ll happen to see something on Facebook about a new album or song release, but it’s rare and I don’t like to let new music slip through the cracks… I also don’t like having to go hunt it all down. Who has the time?

Spotify has a new channel called “Radar Release”. It’s a curated weekly playlist of new music from your favorite bands, or bands you might like based off of your other preferences. Just this week, I discovered that 4 of my favorite bands had put out new music is the last couple months that I knew nothing about. Game changer.

Hopefully, after reading this, you’ve discovered one or two things that could make your life easier too!

You’re welcome.

  • Ginger Marie August 12, 2016 at 1:29 pm

Jessica, I just busted out laughing at work. Your husband is hilarious. the chip and salsa top thing cracked me up. The fact that that annoyed him more than spending the whole day adulting is hilarious!

    • Jessica August 13, 2016 at 6:52 pm

Hahaha. He’s a nut. Every time he writes one, I am amazed at how witty he can be.

  • Neely (@Neelykins) August 12, 2016 at 2:10 pm

I am going to need to try that salsa!

      Go get one, girl!

    • Jessica August 13, 2016 at 6:56 pm

He should! It’s a ton of work though and Colton will only do it every now and then.

  • Rachel G August 12, 2016 at 6:01 pm

The salsa part of this post cracked me up, particularly because it included a helpful demonstrative photo of a tortilla chip inside the diameter of the salsa lid.

    • Jessica August 13, 2016 at 6:57 pm

Haha. Right? Just in case one doesn’t believe him.

  • renee August 13, 2016 at 7:20 am

Cute ideas. My hubs is WAY more organized than I am tho!

    • Jessica August 13, 2016 at 6:58 pm

      Thanks, Renee!

  • Jaime August 13, 2016 at 12:51 pm

I can’t remember the last time I stepped into a Trader Joes. We’re big salsa fans and are always looking for new flavors; that looks amazing!

    • Jessica August 13, 2016 at 6:59 pm

We have one right down the street! We love Trader Joe’s!

  • Brittany August 14, 2016 at 9:21 am

I love the inventive ikea hack!

    • Jessica August 16, 2016 at 9:35 pm

I was nervous about it when Colton first told me, but now I love it!

  • Dr. Daisy August 15, 2016 at 8:10 am

OMGoodness! I really love this post and that your husband shared some great tips that I will share with my hubby! 🙂
I particularly love the IKEA hangers suggestion and will share that with my teens but I also get the chips and salsa dilemma..it’s something my husband complains about too..even though I too think it’s unsanitary 🙂 Now if only I could get him to use a glass instead of drinking milk from the jug..LOL

    • Jessica August 16, 2016 at 9:36 pm

Thanks!! The hanger thing is great to keep from so many holes in walls. Boys can be gross, for sure. Baby steps with the milk thing. haha.

  • Rachel August 16, 2016 at 2:33 pm

That key bottle opener looks so cool! I hate having to hunt down a bottle opening for beer– very inconvenient.

    • Jessica August 16, 2016 at 9:37 pm

      Right? Haha. 🙂
