Whether you own a house or you’re renting, you can still make it feel like “home.” What exactly is home? It’s different for everyone. For me, it’s the feeling of warmth, joy, and relaxation. When I walk through my door, I instantly feel like I am being embraced in a warm hug. My home is a space that brings me joy and I cannot wait to host friends and family in it soon.

My last three places have been rentals, and each one of them have felt more and more like home. Last week, I shared my current house tour and realized a few things. Most of the comments I received, I believe, are because it gives them a feeling of home.

Fresh flowers

The easiest way to spruce up your place is to buy fresh flowers to put in little vases around your house. Usually, I buy one large arrangement and spread it out through several vases. Your local grocery store is a great place to grab a bunch. If you have Trader Joe’s or Central Market nearby, they have an excellent selection.

Nurture a plant

…or 2 or 3. Having a live plant indoors not only makes your space feel more “homey,” but it purifies the air too. Every plant mom and dad has to start from somewhere, and its truly beautiful watching them grow. Many of them don’t even need a lot of light, so there’s a plant for literally everyone.

Organize, minimize, and clean

This one may be difficult, but it really does make a difference. When you minimize, you have less things to organize, which helps keep your home clean. Here are a few quick tips:

  • Put away the things you got out, so when you wake up the next morning it’s clean.
  • Get several different bins to organize kids toys and teach them how to tidy after playing.
  • Keep your kitchen/dining room table free of clutter. This is usually the number one surface to pile up, so make it a goal to clean it off and keep it that way.
  • Sort/open mail immediately. This is unnecessary clutter that will pile up around the house.
  • Get organizers for drawers and cabinets to keep things tidy. Before going to bed, tidy up.

Spruce up your walls

You may not be able to paint the walls in your rental space, but you can add some decor. Mix up frame sizes, hang plants, mirrors, and even hats. It’s one of the easiest way to spruce up a place and make it feel more like home.

Mix in cozy fabrics

Add some cozy blankets, throw pillows, and rugs to add texture to different rooms of your home. Throw pillows are easy and can be switched out as often as you like. Drape blankets over couches and chairs to add another cozy dimension to your space.

There you have it, friends. Five easy ways to make your place feel more like home.
