How to Organize Your Closet

I am a bit obsessive about having a clean closet.  For me, it is easier to figure out what to wear and what I need when my closet is clean and organized.  However, life gets in the way sometimes and in my super busy weeks, I am lucky if clothes even make it to the closet.  When I finally do get some free time (like this spring break), I organize and keep it that way for months.  Here are some tips for how to organize your closet.

  1. Set aside at least two hours

This may sounds daunting, but it really depends on how big your closet is, the last time you’ve organized (if ever), how much you have in it…you get the point.  If you set aside enough time, you won’t feel rushed.

  2. Take everything out

Pile all of your clothes on your bed.  It is much easier to plan out how you want to organize it when it is empty.

  3. Try on everything you are unsure about

If you haven’t worn it in a year, you probably won’t wear it.  Try it on to see if it even still fits you.

  4. Create piles

Create piles of clothes you are donating/selling/need altered/want to hang (I usually organize these by type- tank top, dress, skirt, pants, etc.)

  5. Hanger consistencylove you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger foodie healthy how to organize your closet

Closets look nicer when everything is hung up on one type of hanger (rather than a ton of mismatched plastic and wire hangers).  I use Mainstays Standard Plastic Hangers, White but you can use any type of hanger you prefer.

  6. Hang up by style and colorlove you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger foodie healthy how to organize your closet

My clothes are hung by sleeve-length, style and color.  It may sound like a lot, but it is helpful and how my brain works.  First, I separate by sleeve length, then I order every category by color (in this order: white, beige, brown, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, grey black).  Prints are ordered by whatever color is the background/primary color.

  7. Use clear buckets for misc. items

I have all my swimsuits in one bucket, leggings and winter scarves, spring scarves, belts, etc. all in different clear buckets.  This helps keep them off of my floor and easy to locate when I need them.

  8. Keep it that way

Whenever I take something off of the hanger, I move the hanger to the back (rather than having multiple empty hangers throughout my closet).  This makes it easier to hang everything up after washing because I don’t have to search my closet for empty hangers since they are all in one place.

Every time I go through my closet and find things I won’t wear or can’t wear anymore, I create a pile to donate or send in to thredup.

So smart! I go through mine all the time too. I have never heard of ThreadUp though…

I agree on keeping the hangers all the same! That makes a closet look so much cleaner and organized.

Yes! That was the first thing I did when I moved out of my parents house (get all matching hangers). I haven’t looked back since.

It looks great!! Hanging by style has simplified my routine SO much! Who knew a little thing would have such a big impact?

I also love to do the Kon Mari method in my closet by hanging things from heaviest fabric to lightest fabric. For whatever reason it really does create a light and bright feeling in my closet!

That makes complete sense. Its always hot here, so I don’t have a lot of fabric options. 😉
