How to Stay Hydrated

Today is the first day of summer.  Now, more than ever, it is important to make sure you stay hydrated.  Did you know you should be drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water (for example, if you weight 140 pounds, you should drink at least 70 ounces of water every day).  If you are outside sweating in this Texas heat, you should be drinking even more than that.

Drinking water is also a great way to help you lose weight.  When you feel hungry in between meals, it may be your body telling you to drink water.  Drink a glass of water before unnecessary snacking.

This may be overwhelming, but there are ways to up your water intake.  Here are five tips to help you get in more water and stay hydrated this summer.

Order water

Instead of ordering a soda when you are at a restaurant, order water.  I always drink more water in restaurants when I have someone else filling up my glass for me.  This will also save you money on your bill.

Not all of your water intake has to be by drinking water.  There are a lot of foods that are made up of water. A few of these are cucumbers, celery, watermelon, cherry and grape tomatoes.  Watermelon is the perfect poolside snack for these summer months.

Try it sparkling

The older I get, the more I appreciate the benefits of sparkling water.  It aids in digestion, improving indigestion and constipation.  Not to mention, helps you stay hydrated. Add a splash of lemon and lime and you have a great alternative to a lemon, lime soda without all of the sugar and hard to read words.

Infuse it love you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger Stay hydrated infused waters

Infused water is made by soaking fruit or herbs in water (either in a pitcher or by the glass).  The easiest and most common way to infuse is squeezing lemon juice in water, however you can use other fruits too.

Best fruits and herbs for infusing:

  • strawberries
  • oranges
  • grapefruit
  • watermelon
  • cucumber
  • rosemary
  • basil
  • mint

Of course, you can always use your favorite and try new ones.  Some of the best waters I have had are infused combos (yes, you can make infusion combos and it makes your waters delicious). The longer you leave the fruits/herbs in the pitcher/glass, the stronger the flavor will be.  I like to make a pitcher before bed and alternate plain water in between the infused ones the next day.  This way, I grantee I get at least my recommend ounces in each day.

Some great combos to try (you can adjust the amount to flavor to your liking):

Invest in a water bottle

Water bottles are a stylish accessory now, because there are many options to choose from to fit your needs.  Yeti, Swell, and Corkcicle are just a few of the most well known bottles.  They are great at keeping water cold and ice frozen all day.  I use my Yeti at work and my Swell when I workout.

Amazon also sells these fantastic glass infuser water bottles.  It’s the perfect way to drink diffused water all day.  Just fill in the middle compartment with your infusing combos and fill with water.  You can keep the fruit in and continue refilling all day.

Also, if you don’t already have one, go buy yourself a glass pitcher.  It is a great way to drink infused water all day, and perfect for party entertaining.

All great tips! I feel like water bottles are key. When you have a favorite it’s so much easier to keep chugging water. Have you ever heard of Drip Drop? You can only get it at CVS or Walgreens, but it’s supposed to be the better alternative to gatorade and almost as good as coconut water. Helps you absorb necessary minerals that keep you hydrated. AKA faster cure for hangovers. HA!

    • Jessica June 20, 2016 at 5:04 pm

No! I will have to check that out. That would be great to have on hand after our parties. haha.

  • Rebecca Hicks June 20, 2016 at 9:20 am

I love these tips!! And yay for infused water! Also, one of my favorite summer fruits is watermelon. I could eat that stuff all day, but then I’m in the bathroom the rest of the day 😉 Perks of being VERY hydrated, I suppose!

    • Jessica June 20, 2016 at 5:05 pm

Thanks, girlie! I have been eating so much watermelon lately. It has been so perfect to even out this heat.

    • Jessica June 20, 2016 at 5:06 pm

Add fruit to it, and I promise you will be chugging it. haha

  • Johnna June 20, 2016 at 10:33 am

It’s a gazillion degrees here (not really but close) so these tips are very much needed. Thank you!

    • Jessica June 20, 2016 at 5:06 pm

Absolutely! Glad I could help. It has been crazy hot here.

  • Samantha June 20, 2016 at 11:17 am

I’ve been trying to drink a ton of water, especially this summer. I’m in Texas too (Corpus Christi) and man it’s HOT. I’ve also heard that if you drink sodas (or non-water drinks) you’ve got to drink the same amount in water to make up for it. I’m going off of my terrible memory but I think that’s a thing. Also, I ordered one of those app-syncing water bottles (HidrateSpark), I won’t be getting it to December but it’s supposed to track my water intake for me via bluetooth and glow when I need to drink! So excited.

  • Nicole June 21, 2016 at 9:24 am

I have a lidded cup with a straw that I keep at work and tend to sip on that more than a water bottle because I don’t have to take a break from reading to sip from the cup.

    • Jessica June 21, 2016 at 11:45 am

I love straws. I drink so much more water with a straw.

    • Jessica June 23, 2016 at 8:35 am

It has to do with the carbonation. 🙂 Infused water is beautiful.

  • Katy June 26, 2016 at 10:39 am

Do you happen to have a link to the water bottle with the silicone sleeve in the picture? I found a similar one, but it wasn’t a bottle with an infuser.

    • Jessica June 27, 2016 at 5:32 pm

I don’t. I am so sorry. I thought the one I linked up below was it, but you are right…it isn’t a diffuser. I got it as a gift from one of my parents at school. I am so sorry!
