Setting Your Purpose in 2018

With every new year comes goals and resolutions that, to be honest, I only sometimes keep up with. Often times, I find myself making a list of goals and things I want to accomplish, but rarely do I cross everything off my list. I have good intentions, and I usually make my goals pretty reasonable. However, I typically look back at the end of the year with some disappointment for the goals I didn’t quite meet.

This year, I am changing that. I decided to set my purpose for 2018 and choose three words to live out daily. Sure, there will be some goals associated with the words, but they won’t be my main focus. So, what is purpose?

Purpose is “the reason for which something exists” (dictionary.com)

Lately, I have asked myself, “what is my purpose? Why do I exist?” Although I may not ever know my true purpose on Earth, I at least can choose what I hope others see in me. In 2018, my purpose, or three words I want to focus more on are

Encourage. Challenge. Kindness.

Encourage.

Since I was little, I was convinced my main purpose was to encourage. That has always been my word. I hope my friends, family, coworkers, students, and others see me as an encourager. A few years ago, I remember sitting through my counseling interviews and they asked me “what is something you can bring our students and school” and I answered “encouragement.” Although I was never a cheerleader in school, I consider myself a cheerleader in life.

What does encouragement look like for 2018?

Ways I hope to encourage in 2018: Speak positivity into the lives of my friends, family, and myself. Rather than fall in the trap of negative thinking, I want to actively pursue positivity and share that with others. Often times, this is much easier to do for other people and not so easy for myself, but encouragement should be all encompassing. This year I will practice self-encouragement as I continue to encourage others.

Challenge.

This word is difficult for me, because I tend to find comfort in the familiar. I don’t like stepping out of my comfort zone and like things to stay relatively the same. This year, I want to make some changes to that.

How can I challenge myself in 2018?

Ways I hope to challenge in 2018: I hope to challenge myself physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In March, Colton and I will join my best friend in Costa Rica for a week long surf camp. I have never surfed before and don’t think of myself as the strongest swimmer. This year, I am upping my workout regimen and will be working with a personal trainer at LFT Personal Training in Plano. I chose them because the location, hours, flexibility, and low membership pricing. My first session starts today, and I cannot wait to share my experience with you over the next few months. If getting in better shape is a goal for you this year, check them out. Your intro session is free.

Emotionally and spiritually, I plan on taking more risks outside of my comfort zone. Honestly, I am not sure exactly what this will look like, but when opportunities present themselves, I want to accept the challenge. Not having an exact plan laid out goes against my type A personality, but I think it will be good for me.

Kindness.

Kindness may seem like the easiest word, but it’s not always easy to be kind. I struggle with choosing kind words to say to and about people I get angry with. However, I believe that kindness can truly change the world. If everyone focused on being a little more kind to others it could inspire change in a big way. This year, I want to be a part of that movement.

In what ways can I show compassion for 2018?

Ways I hope to show compassion in 2018: I want to consistently seek opportunities to show random acts of kindness to others. This could be in simple ways like a smile or holding the door for someone or larger ways like buying a meal, giving up time, or donating to charity. In addition to showing kindness to strangers, I want to be more intentional about how I talk to others when I am frustrated. Words are powerful and crucial to relationships, so I want to choose kind words to empower those around me.

That’s it. Three not-so-simple words to live out each day. I am writing them down and posting them on my mirror, in my car, on my calendar and anywhere else I need to to remind me.

So…what’s your purpose?

I LOVE this post! Those three words are pretty much parallel to mine if I had to pick three as well. I always strive to focus on positivity, encourage is just wonderful, same with acts of kindness. and have SO MUCH FUN on that surfing trip!

Thank you so much Brittney! I will for sure! Working on strengthening myself so I don’t look a crazy mess out there. haha.

I also used to think my purpose was to encourage others. I was life’s biggest cheerleader for my friends and family. Now, I think it’s more to support and be part of a reliable parenting community.

    • Reply Jessica January 4, 2018 at 7:39 pm

That sounds like a great purpose for sure. <3

A few years ago I made a resolution to be more kind. I lasted until September – which I thought was pretty good haha I tried surrounding myself with people who would make that easy… but wow, people can just be mean and stupid 🙂

    • Reply Jessica January 4, 2018 at 7:40 pm

Absolutely. People around you can have such a huge effect.

  • Reply nefeli January 2, 2018 at 12:32 pm

Search for my main purpose. I think is more than one. Be more calm, kind and appreciate small things is my purpose

    • Reply Jessica January 10, 2018 at 12:49 pm

Those sound perfect! I like them all.

Beautifully written, and I love your three words. Kindness, much to my chagrin, is a struggle for me as well. It’s something I really want to work on because I know my kids are watching and I want them to learn kindness from me.

    • Reply Jessica January 11, 2018 at 7:28 am

Thank you, Jordan. And yes, they are watching and can learn so much from you.

This post is so inspiring. I love what you’ve written on encouragement! But what really gets me is your thoughts on Kindness. Kindness is one of my words for 2018 (the other being trust) but I haven’t really been able to put into words why I wanted that word and you have definitely wrapped it up nicely! Cheers to a great year and enjoy your surf camp!

I have found my purpose and I am working on it. Every day comes with a new challenge, but I am trying to stick to my purpose as much as I can. It is rewarding to live your life purposefully.

      I agree completely.

Encouragement, kindness and challenging yourself to be a better person are such virtuous goals! I think these are goals that anyone should be focusing on in the upcoming year.

    • Reply Jessica January 11, 2018 at 7:29 am

For sure. Thank you so much!

These are amazing words to live by, and even more so in the way you explained them. I want to be more positive this year, focus on making sure to spend time with my children, and teach them kindness through example. It’s not always easy, but it can be done.

    • Reply Jessica January 11, 2018 at 7:30 am

It absolutely can be! You can totally do the positivity thing!

Surf camp in Costa Rica sounds like an absolute dream! And it sounds like you will be well prepared for it. Can’t wait to hear more about that! Great goals for 2018

This was such an inspiring post! Surf Camp in Costa Rica sounds absolutely amazing. I think my three words would have to be Create, Inspire and Explore as I want to create more this year. I also want to inspire and be inspired in many ways. And I have a real travel bug at the moment, so I’m hoping to explore new places.

    • Reply Jessica January 11, 2018 at 7:31 am

Those are great words! I love exploring new places.

Having a purpose for everything that you are doing is so important. Setting goals without purpose is pretty much meaningless. Thanks for this post!

    • Reply Jessica January 11, 2018 at 7:31 am

      Absolutely! I couldn’t agree more.

  • Reply Hanna Smith January 3, 2018 at 7:42 am

I love this! Setting a Purpose gives us so much more and goes so much deeper than just setting a resolution or goal that is just meaningless with nothing behind it.

      Thank you! I agree completely.

  • Reply Lauren January 3, 2018 at 9:01 am

This is amazing! I love the theme of encouraging. I know you and I can both use that one so much at work, but it’s definitely one to think about outside of work too!

Right? There are so many opportunities for that with the littles.

  • Reply Ashley January 3, 2018 at 9:35 am

I love what you’ve written about encouraging others. My focus has always been on challenging myself, but there’s so much value in driving others to challenge themselves, too, and supporting them through the process.

Thank you, Ashley. I agree completely. 🙂

Such a great way to look at goals for the year! And I love yours, especially kindness. We all can use a little more of that in our lives!

    • Reply Jessica January 12, 2018 at 9:44 am

      Thank you! I agree.

What a great idea! My word of the year is Adventure but it does encompass various goals and things I want to work toward. I don’t really have very specific goals, because if I don’t reach them, that’s okay. I just want to keep reaching forward. I like the words you chose! Good luck.

I love that! Adventurous is the perfect word.

  • Reply Ariel January 3, 2018 at 3:38 pm

This is definitely a wonderful idea. I love how one of your goals is kindness. I think we could all learn to be a little more kind in this world, me included. I am definitely excited to see what 2018 brings for me.

This is so inspiring! I like how so many people this year are choosing words to live by instead of just specific goals. I think out of those kindness may be the hardest because other people can be cruel at times and it’s not always easy to be kind in return.

    • Reply Jessica January 16, 2018 at 10:47 am

I agree girl. I am a kind person, but not always to the people who may need it most (especially when they aren’t kind to me).
