Thursday a couple of friends and I checked out City Surf Fitness in Deep Ellum. Every Thursday through the summer they are featuring free community classes at 7:00 pm, so we thought it would be fun to try.
I love the location (hate that it’s not closer to me). The outside was cool and the inside was just one big room with several surf board balancing on balance balls (and secured in). Mitchell, the instructor and co-founder, was teaching the class before but welcomed me in.
City Surf circuits
The class was 50 minutes divided into 30 second circuts. It went by SO FAST. The whole class Mitch was encouraging and demonstrated each move several times, so I never felt lost. I know my core was engaged throughout the whole class, because I was balancing on the surfboard.
Honestly, I was a sweaty mess but I loved it. Apparently my Fitbit loved it too because I was in the red zone the majority of class.
The quick, changing format was great. I never felt bored or quit because I knew we would hangs moves quickly. Mitch is an excellent instructor. He counted down so we knew exactly how much longer we had, was super positive, friendly and approachable.
The class is meant to be taken barefoot or with sticky socks. City surf offers customers the option of purchasing or borrowing socks. They also credit your account for parking!
Balancing on the surdboard gave usual moves a unique difficulty. My arms were killing me from paddling and slamming the sand bag down (a great stress releaser).
It’s great that city surf offers free classes, because it gives me a reason to drive to Dallas to take classes.
There are not lockers available, but the whole class is in one room, so the cubbies are just fine.
Dallas is full of fun and innovative fitness studios that offer a variety of ways to get fit. City Surf is no exception. I highly recommend checking out this studio. You will have so much fun and can imagine you are surfing in California (but showing off by doing planks and lunges)!
