Thirty Things Before Turning 30 Update

April 24, 2017

Last year on my 29th birthday, I posted a list of thirty things everyone should do before turning 30.  This year has flown by, and I cannot believe that on Friday I will be entering a new decade in my life.  Even though I didn’t accomplish all 30 things on my list, I feel pretty good about what I did.  Thirteen out of thirty is not great, but I still have more time to work on them.  Life is all about success and failures, because you learn a lot from the times you don’t accomplish a goal.  Here is my honest update on how I did.

30 things to do before turning 30

1. Learn something new

I wanted to learn how to sew and never actually did.  This is still something I want to try to learn soon. Maybe I can teach myself during our long drives in Maeve this summer.

2. Visit a new foreign country

We visited Greece for 2 weeks last summer and had the most magical time.  Read about Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini. My twenties were full of visiting foreign countries, road trips in the United States, cool cities, and beaches.  I can’t wait to see where we go next.

3. Run (at least) a half marathon

Unfortunately, I was unable to accomplish this goal, but it is still one of my goals for 2017.

4. Spend the weekend in the state capitol

Not only did we visit Austin, but we spent the weekend at ACL.  I no longer can say I haven’t spent time in Austin. Yay!

5. Go hiking/camping

We went camping twice and have an entire 3 weeks of camping planned for the summer. Colton and I bought a Westy this year and took her on her first camping trip to Arkansas.

6. Girls’ trip

Check.  One of my best friends Hannah and I went to Mexico and it was the perfect little getaway.

7. Spend a day local wine tasting

No. I am still not sure why this one never happened.

8. Make a dream come true

Colton started a new job and has been so busy, so we haven’t had time to open the little shop yet.

9. Break a record

Not this year.

1o. Learn a new dance

I guess the dab doesn’t count on this one, however I did take several barredio classes this year and worked on my dancing skills.

11. #Adult

This one may seem strange, but I have needed my wisdom teeth removed since I was a teenager. I finally did it! You can even see my post-op video here.

12. Learn to bake/cook something

I wanted to learn how to bake the chocolate avocado cake from Mexican sugar, but I have taught myself several other things, including this copycat stuffed avocados from Urban Rio.

13. Accomplish a career goal

Love You More Too did way better than I ever imagined in the first year.  You can check out some of the things I learned blogging the first year.

14. Skydive

One of the most amazing things I have experienced.  Everyone should try this at some point in their life.

15. Solo photoshoot

Check.  I still don’t love taking photos by myself, but I loved getting to be a part of The Redhead Project.  Keith Barraclough created this fantastic project and I encourage you to check it out.

16. Break a bad habit

I am currently in the process of breaking my habit of nail biting.  Better late than never! Honestly, it’s been fun watching my nails grow a little every day.

17. Meet someone you admire

Blog and Brunch DFW

Initially, I meant this goal as meeting a celebrity, however I realize I meet people I admire all of the time.  Blogging has introduced me to some of the most determined, kind-hearted, food-loving, fun and daring people.  Each person I have met through this industry has had an impact on me and I am so grateful.  I would love to list out each person and their blog individually, but I know I would accidentally leave someone off and feel horrible.  Between Dallas Fitness Ambassadors, Blog and Brunch DFW, Dallas Blogger Brunch, Plano Magazine’s list of bloggers, and all the meetups in between, the Dallas blogging community is fantastic.

18. Accomplish a physical goal

I still cannot do 30 pushups without dropping to my knees, but I am building up my strength.  In barre, I use the 3 lb weights more than 2 though (don’t roll your eyes at smaller weights until you try it, please).

19. Complete a 30 day yoga/stretch challenge

No. My body needs stretching and I still haven’t made it a priority (just being honest).  This is something I want to work on this year.

20. Eat vegan for a week…

love you more too north dallas blogger plano lifestyle blogger vegan challenge

I did it!  I have even incorporated Meatless Mondays into my every week diet.

21. Try a new ethnic restaurant

A few times this year I have tried sushi, which is a big deal for me.  However, I still haven’t expanded my restaurant tastes, despite Colton asking and trying.

22. Plant/Grow/Garden

I still haven’t started it, but I have kept a succulent alive for 10 weeks so far.  We have to build a garden up to keep Chuck and Lucy out of it, so this is a large project we haven’t taken on yet.

23. Complete a list

I wanted to complete this list, but it changes periodically. We have been great at trying new and fun restaurants, but haven’t been to all of them.

24. Mission trip/work

We have been blessed to be able to help out with several friends going on mission trips, but not go on any ourselves yet.

25. Use up gift card balances

Yes!!  I got rid of all of them/used them all up.

26. Organize old files

I got rid of my filing cabinet and will be working on weeding through the files this summer. Yay for progress!

27. Read

My goal was to read 8 books, but I didn’t close. I read a few, so hopefully the road trips this summer will be a chance for me to slow down and read.

28. Make something

Not that I intentionally made from Pinterest.

29. Simplify

This is something I have been working on slowly but surely. It will be finished by the end of the summer.

30. Write a thank you card to 30 people

I shared thank you note etiquette and wrote several cards this year, but not any just because.

PIN for later

Thanks girl. It’s so easy to focus on the things I didn’t do, but I love being proud of what I have accomplished.

Yay! Can’t wait to see what you put on your list!

  • Reply Kate April 24, 2017 at 7:41 am

I love this list! It’s a really wide array of things that are actually possible to do! So many bloggers post stuff like this and they’re all so unachieveable, this actually has given me some ideas on what kind of things I want to do. Particularly a photoshoot stuck out and a half marathon (maybe a full but it does take a lot of time to train also I totally can’t even do 1 pushup without falling to my knees so 30 is impressive!)

  • Reply Rachel G April 24, 2017 at 8:27 am

Sounds like you had a pretty amazing last year in your 20s! Your travels look like they were especially exciting! I got my wisdom teeth out when I was 17…and if I knew what I was getting into at the time, I don’t think I would have been brave enough to do it!

    • Reply Jessica May 2, 2017 at 10:34 am

Right?! It was not the most fun experience but I am so thankful it is over!

  • Reply Beth Kondrick April 24, 2017 at 9:27 am

You definitely hit a bunch of these and that is awesome! I should create a similar list for 40, it would give me five years to accomplish anyway!

    • Reply Jessica May 2, 2017 at 10:35 am

You totally should! I would love to see what you put on it!

  • Reply Tomiko April 24, 2017 at 9:46 am

I guess I’m on the right track cause I’ve done most of these but I’m 46 😩😩😩😩😩😩

    • Reply Jessica May 2, 2017 at 10:35 am

That’s awesome! You are never too old to start reaching goals.

  • Reply Brooke April 24, 2017 at 10:47 am

I love this list! The #adult is my favorite. I am about to turn 31 and do not feel any more like an adult than at 22. Does that ever change?

    • Reply Jessica May 2, 2017 at 10:35 am

Haha. I don’t think so. We are young forever!

  • Reply Larissa April 24, 2017 at 10:54 am

I love this list! I feel like I should make one for myself. I loved the adulting one and the self photo shoot with the cupcakes. Super cute! For this list, I know I could never complete it, because I don’t think I’ll run a half marathon, and I definitely will not be going sky-diving!

    • Reply Jessica May 2, 2017 at 10:36 am

Thank you!! Sky diving isn’t for everyone, but it was such an incredible experience. 🙂

  • Reply Martina April 24, 2017 at 10:56 am

3 is definitely on my to do! Maybe it will be good motivation to get back in shape post baby!

I can’t wait to check this one off my list either!

  • Reply Kim April 24, 2017 at 12:02 pm

This is an awesome list. I have a few of these crossed off my list. Happy Early birthday!!!

Thank you!! Way to go for crossing some off yourself. 🙂

  • Reply Emily April 24, 2017 at 12:04 pm

    • Reply Jessica May 2, 2017 at 10:38 am

Thank you, Emily!! You should definitely try it. It’s not as scary as it seems.

  • Reply Kelly April 24, 2017 at 1:57 pm

      Never too late!

  • Reply Divya April 24, 2017 at 2:34 pm

You had quite the productive year! Although I AM a bit surprised about not wine tasting for a day yet! (That’d be the #1 thing I’d check off my list, hahaha!)

    • Reply Jessica May 2, 2017 at 10:39 am

Haha. I know!! I have in other countries, just not locally. I will be doing that at some point this year.

  • Reply Alicia Pope April 24, 2017 at 2:45 pm

I’m really impressed with your list! A couple of these i have only just accomplished and I’m a little ahead of you in decades (ahem). I just had my wisdom teeth out a few years ago—yuck. They didn’t come in until I was in my mid-thirties so the dentist has been telling me for a while to get rid of them. Check. Love the pic of you—haha. Skydiving? Wow!! Not sure I have the guts for that. A girl’s weekend away somewhere warm would be amazing. I can’t seem to harness the girls for a trip, although we do stay a night in the city locally once or twice a year. Couldn’t make it without the girlfriends! I would love to see Greece. You’ve inspired me to write a list for my next birthday.

    • Reply Jessica May 2, 2017 at 10:49 am

Thank you! The wisdom teeth was not a fun experience but I am so glad it’s over. You could totally skydive! It’s something everyone should experience at least once. I understand getting everyone together can be hard, but it’s worth it for a little weekend together. I can’t wait to see what’s on your list!
